Collin Street Bakery is a bakery located in east Texas, known for their world class fruitcakes.
They traditionally have outsourced their ingredients from farms across the country, and from their own organic farm in Costa Rica. They are now discussing plans to begin growing their own fruits, vegetables, and herbs in a greenhouse using hydroponics. Hydroponic gardening is a soil-free method of growing plants using only nutrients and water.
The greenhouse is currently under construction, due to be completed within the next two weeks. The greenhouse is being built behind the original location on 7th street in Corsicana, Texas. They are only growing lettuce and tomatoes for now, but plan on expanding their plant variety by growing spices, basil, and various peppers. The greenhouse will be quite large expanding 30 by 48 feet. Conscious of their carbon footprint, they decided to undergo this project to reduce waste and be more environmentally friendly.
It’s a money making project that will yield fresher, better produce with less waste, and decrease fuel consumption in transport. It’s sustainable and uses significantly less water. All the water used is recycled.
I’m so worried about water running out soon with all this continual drought we have in Texas.
